Instructions for Making a Dutch Door Bullet Journal Cover

1. Establish the base design for your page

To get started, gather all of your materials so you have them accessible.

open your bullet journal to a blank page spread. On the right side of the page, use your markers to create a light color-washed gradient. Starting at the page fold, blend your marker colors from dark to light. Next, using a calligraphy pen or writing tool, write the month at the center of the page.

2. Cut the dutch door

Now it's time to create your Dutch door. To start, square off the bottom right and top right corner of the page by cutting an even square out of the corners above and below your written month. Then, using an X-acto knife (recommended) or scissors cut around the text by leaving a little white space that flows around the letters. Now you have a beautiful Dutch door! the next step is to add a design to the page behind that your Dutch door now showcases.

3. Create your desgin

At this step you can use your own creative vision, however, if you wish to replicate ours, here's what we did:

  • Place an un-inked heart stamp down on your page. Add tiny dots to mark the two tops and bottom of the heart with a pencil for scale.
  • Using the dots for scale, take your markers and color hand-drawn heart shapes on the paper that is uncovered by the Dutch door.
  • Use heart stamps to stamp over the drawn heart shapes.
  • Repeat this process to create a pattern that fills the uncovered part of the page.

4. Optional: Add embellishments

Feel free to add some fun embellishments to add some pizzaz to your page. For example, we simply placed a strip of lovely washi tape to separate our heart design and our monthly goals. Use your own creative ideas and expressions to add any additional embellishments for fun!

5. Add your journals monthly quote, goal, or reminders

If you'd like to add some functionality to this cover spread, add your month's goal, reminders, or a motivational quote on the section of the page covered by your Dutch door. This way as you flip the Dutch door open, you uncover your goals and tasks you've set for the month. Try using bullet journal clear stamps to make organizing your journal tasks fun and easy!
